Understanding and preventing surface distress

In many industrial applications that have lubricated rolling/sliding contacts such as rolling bearings, power density has steadily increased over time due to the need for greater efficiency, reduction of weight and costs (i.e., downsizing). Alongside, this has brought an increased severity in working conditions, such as heavier loads in combination with higher temperatures, thinner oil films and/or boundary-lubrication conditions, and this can give rise to surface distress in machine components .
