Floating bearing arrangement

In a floating bearing arrangement the shaft is cross-located, but is able to move axially a certain distance between the two end positions (i.e. “float”). With this arrangement, the shaft can also be axially located by other components on the shaft (e.g. a double helical gear). Suitable bearings for floating bearing arrangements are:
  • deep groove ball bearings (fig. 1)
  • self-aligning ball bearings
  • spherical roller bearings
In a floating bearing arrangement, it is important that one ring of each bearing, preferably the outer ring, is able to move axially on its seat.
A floating bearing arrangement can also be obtained with two NJ design cylindrical roller bearings, mirrored, with offset rings (fig. 2). When using cylindrical roller bearings, axial movement on the housing seat is not required, because it is accommodated within the bearings.
