Geared
Solutions for rigid and flexible arrangements
Wind turbines with a gearbox are generally categorized as rigid or flexible.Flexible systems are those with 3-point suspension or 2-point suspension. To support the main shaft, a two-point design uses two bearings, which are typically spherical roller bearings. In this design the gearbox acts only as a torque converter. In a three-point rotor bearing arrangement, one spherical roller bearing and the gearbox itself support the rotor shaft.
Rigid arrangements are those with 1-point suspension, or no shaft.
