Energy and CO2

Our climate strategy

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most significant greenhouse gas produced as a result of our business activities. In addition, considering the main processes directly or indirectly applied, emissions of other greenhouse gases are typically generated in proportion to those of CO2. For those reasons our focus is on our CO2 footprint.

We monitor and report our CO2 emissions according to the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. This characterizes an organization's greenhouse gas inventory into three scopes:
  • scope 1 (direct emissions from on-site combustion processes)
  • scope 2 (indirect emissions associated with the supply of energy - mainly electricity - to SKF facilities)
  • scope 3 (all other indirect emissions such as those related to logistics or supply chain)


We also monitor and report the avoided emissions made possible with our SKF BeyondZero customer solutions.

How do we address global warming?

  • Goal

    Direct carbon emissions from SKF operations (Scope 1 & 2)
    ...such as manufacturing, warehouse operations and company cars and indirect emissions from power generation related to electricity and heat used by SKF. 


    • – 40% CO2 emissions from manufacturing per tonne of sold products.

    We call them "strategic levers", this is basically strategic initiatives within SKF or trends that can enable a good progress on energy and CO2 performance over time.


    Material efficiency

    • SKF's World Class Manufacturing strategy focuses on reducing scrap and optimizing processes.
    • Scrap reduction means less machined material and thereby reduced energy and emission per product output. This also lead to less procured raw material and components.
    • Process optimization also leads to reduced energy demand.
    Energy efficiency
    • Background energy is the energy that always needs to by switched on to run the facility even with no production, SKF works continuously to reduce this by efficient lights, heat, ventilation and AC etc.
    • Make central systems more efficient. central systems are for example compressed air, closed-loop water systems, hydraulic systems etc. that are needed to run many of our factories. We constantly work to reduce the energy use from these systems.
    • In the production channels, a lot can still be done to reduce energy demand. 
    • The consolidation of SKF production to a fewer number of large factories allows us to utilize the factories better, this will lead to less energy input per units produced.

    Renewable energy

    • Procurement of “green” energy.

    Grid factor

    The final piece of the puzzle in order to meet the target, means we would rely on a continual increased share of low-carbon electricity in national energy mixes. Even if SKF does not have significant influence on the renewable energy industry, what we deliver to the wind, hydro and ocean energy certainly helps this transition. SKF serves the industry with products and solutions that reduces the total cost of ownership for renewable energy generation and ultimately enable more renewable energy.
