Combining bearing and sensor functionality in one unit, sensor bearings can be integrated in AC induction motors to allow precise speed and direction control. Thanks to their compact size, these sensor bearings can help to save space in electric motor designs. The new generation of SKF Motor Encoder Unit offers a much more robust and cost-effective solution. 

The sensor bearing is protected from the effects of power surges and electromagnetic fields to avoid electronic failures, resulting in a reduction of maintenance and warranty costs. The bearing is protected by a contact seal one side. On the opposite side, the impulse ring and sensor body create an effective labyrinth seal to keep lubricant in and solid contaminants out of the bearing cavity.

Built-in sensor protection

In addition to accurately detecting AC induction motor speed and direction, the new generation of SKF Motor Encoder Unit provides integrated protection for its electronic sensor. The unit features an electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter encapsulated in the sensor body to protect against inductive or capacitive power surges and electrostatic discharges. This shielded encapsulation results in an easy integration, as no extra space is needed outside the motor.
And thanks to the sensor body’s Faraday cage, this new generation unit is able to deliver accurate speed and direction data even in harsh electromagnetic environments.

Signal and position flexibility

The new unit employs a compact and robust sensor that produces an incremental encoder signal. The sensor is accurate down to zero rpm. An integrated active circuit, which requires an external voltage supply in the sensor body, contains a Hall effect cell that produces two output square signals.

Available for 30 mm shaft diameter, the new generation of SKF Motor Encoder Unit can be installed at either bearing position of AC induction motors.
