Tail Rotor

Description of application

The tail rotor is an extremely important control system on conventional helicopters. The tail rotor counteracts the torque effect created by the rotation of the main rotor system, and controls the direction in which the helicopter travels.

Various methods exist to achieve this, depending on the different helicopter manufacturers’ design principles, such as vectored thrust, ducted fans, and conventional tail rotor.

The tail rotor could be a rigid or semi-rigid design, and either a “pusher” or “puller” configuration. Helicopters using more powerful engine units with greater torque, generally utilise semi-rigid tail rotor designs incorporating fluid or elastomeric dampers.
