Like countless other bearing applications, converters operate with one locating, or fixed-position bearing and one non-locating, or free-position bearing. The non-locating bearing allows axial displacement during thermal expansion and accommodates deformation over long operating periods.

Over time, however, excessive trunnion ring deformation may exceed the axial displacement of the non-locating bearing, eventually ending in bearing failure and unplanned downtime. To help prevent such costly outcomes, SKF has pioneered the use of sensors to measure the bearing position. The sensors detect the actual axial position of the bearing inside the housing and send this data to the process control room, alerting operators to problems long before they result in unplanned downtime.
