A number of technologies have evolved over the last 5-10 years derived from consumer technologies to aid maintenance organizations in their effectiveness and reducing costs. These technologies include industrialized handheld devices, wireless sensing, remote diagnostics and software hosting as a service, among others. This can result in further maintenance automation, more cost effective watch keeping and lower overall cost of maintaining maintenance related software and hardware products. Nevertheless these are only tools, and although required to make advances they are only one part of the success equation of a maintenance department. Successful companies consistently follow a process of continuous improvement, setting new targets and achieving them, and using industry best practice benchmarks to measure their success.
