Heat treatment makes tougher bearings

The right steel properties are essential to good bearing performance. Heat treatment is a key process in toughening engineering components. SKF has developed a patented process that gives steel a wear resistance that is twice as effective as current processes. Additionally, a new steel, designated 755V, has been developed especially with thick-walled bearing rings in mind. Such rings are used for large-size self-aligning roller bearings, which often have to operate under arduous conditions. The combination of this new steel and the improved heat treatment process creates tough, hard-wearing, large-size self-aligning roller bearings. In fact, this combination gives a three-fold increase in wear resistance.
