Engineering polymers for designer cages

Good mechanical properties combined with the advantages of flexible sophisticated manufacturing techniques have led to growth in the use of polymer materials for bearing cages. Today, around 40% of cages produced by SKF are polymer based. In some applications, polymer cages now dominate over metal designs because of their superior performance and competitive pricing. The choice of certain polymer is driven by the particular application. With more than 50 base polymer materials to choose from, engineers need to understand the properties of the various polymer classes to make a suitable selection. The performance of polymer materials continues to improve. As prices become more competitive with metal for the more demanding applications that require ability to withstand higher temperatures, even these applications could become suitable for polymer cages.
