Solutions within the SKF BeyondZero portfolio must provide significant environmental benefits without serious environmental trade-offs, from a life cycle perspective. They need to address one or more defined environmental challenges, such as, climate change, natural resource use and the avoidance of various types of environmental contamination.

This can be done in one of two ways:
    • The product or solution can be “Designed for environment”; it provides environmental benefits in its own right through some inherent characteristics (such as low friction or low weight),
    • or it can be “Applied for environment”; the product or solution helps to improve the environmental performance of the system (customer application) in which it is applied.

SKFs complete business within the renewable energy industry as well as SKF’s emerging business in the full electric vehicle industry are included in the SKF BeyondZero portfolio under the “Applied for environment” category. These industries are included because it is widely acknowledged that they are technologically critical to reducing fossil fuel use and therefore addressing climate change.

The benefits are derived from a comparison of the environmental performance of SKFs solution to that of a defined baseline.
