Most sound and vibration is produced by forces acting upon a structure. In rotating (and reciprocating machines such as diesels) it is the rotor that produces those centrifugal excitation forces. However there is a form of excitation that is the exception to the rule.
Gas or fluid flow over some obstruction or orifice can create turbulence which provides the source of excitation and, in turn, noise and vibration problems. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge in the USA was a classic example but in industry similar resonances can occur in pipes, valves and junctions (joints). This session explains how and why these problems occur and includes a discussion on the topic of cavitation.
