Dato’ Abdul Samad boys off to Sweden to play in the Gothia World Youth Cup

SKF in Malaysia will send Dato’ Abdul Samad, Tanjung Ipoh Secondary School, the winning team of SKF Meet The World – qualifying tournament for Gothia Cup, on an all-expense paid trip to Gothenburg, Sweden from 15th – 21st July to represent Malaysia at the Gothia Cup, world's largest football tournament for youth and SKF is a proud main partner of the event.
SKF is a worldwide leading Swedish manufacturer and supplier of bearings and units with establishment in Malaysia since 1973. SKF in Malaysia has been running the local Meet The World football tournaments since 2007. The idea behind this qualifying tournament to Gothia Cup is not only to organize an exciting football tournament for a local community but also to give more young people the chance to travel to Gothenburg, take part in the Gothia Cup and meet their peers from different countries.
Gothia Cup is a one-week tournament that takes place in Gothenburg, Sweden in July every year. The aim of Gothia Cup is to create a meeting place for young people regardless of gender, social background, culture, skin colour or religion. The tournament has been going on for some 30 years and every year it attracts around 1700 teams from 80 nations around the world.
SKF in Malaysia, with the support of the Negeri Sembilan Education Ministry (Sports Division), kicked off the Meet the World tournament at SMK King George V on 14th and 15th March 2018 where U-14 Boys team from 13 schools, all district champions selected from more than 100 schools in Negeri Sembilan battled it out over a series of 20-minute matches.
“The Meet the World tournament is all about inspiration. It is a great tournament where we give children a chance to take part in the Gothia Cup and meet other young people from different countries. All this is made possible by following their passion for football.” said SKF Bearing Industries (Malaysia) Managing Director, Kee Kam Dick.
“The Meet the World tournament and the Gothia Cup partnership is one of our largest CSR projects under our Community Care initiatives and we are extremely proud of it.” he added.
In the finals, it was a showdown between Za'ba and Dato' Abdul Samad, Tanjung Ipoh.
The game ended at a 0-0 tie and the teams had to go for a penalty shootout, with Dato' Abdul Samad clinching the victory by 4-3!
Both schools also played in the Meet The World tournament finals last year with Za'ba emerged as the 2017 champion in the penalty shootout.
This year’s worthy champion, Dato Abdul Samad Secondary School secured their win with their great skills and strength as their proud parents and friends cheered loudly and celebrated in the field!
Apart from the finalists, the other teams which took part were SMK Tunku Ampuan Durah, SMA Hj Mohd Yatim, SSN SMK Za’ba, MRSM Kuala Klawang, SMK Dato Abdul Samad (Port Dickson), SMK Pasir Besar, SMK Senawang, SMK Seri Ampangan, MRSM Serting, SMS Tuanku Jaafar, SMK Sedia Raja and SMK Bukit Kepayang.

The exposure they will experience at an international level will contribute to their football skills development and help them excel as high performance athlete in the future.” lauds Dato’ Abdul Samad Secondary School Headmaster, Mr. Ezaiddin Hussain.

This is the first time Dato’ Abdul Samad is representing the country at the Gothia Cup.
Team captain, Azri Azizi said “I feel extremely happy that our school team has won the Meet the World tournament this year. With plenty of determination, team spirit and trainings, our effort has certainly paid off! Special thanks also go to our coach, school headmaster, our parents and friends for their relentless support.
The excitement we are feeling right now is overwhelming! We look forward to meet friends from other countries around the world and will make full use of this opportunity to give our best in the Gothia Cup!

Most of the boys have never been outside of Malaysia before and now they will fly halfway across the globe and get to meet new friends from all over the world. When they return home, they will bring back memories of great football achievements and stories of fascinating meetings with new friends from different countries and cultures.
