SKF® magnetic sensor veering solution developed for energy-efficient vehicles

A new SKF® magnetic sensor bearing introduces a solution as part of a micro-hybrid vehicle system delivering enhanced energy efficiency.  The innovative system (developed by Valeo, a leading global automotive supplier) provides automakers with opportunities to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions up to 28 percent in dense urban traffic without any radical changes in the engine architecture.

The SKF rotor-positioning bearing is integrated into Valeo's StARS (Starter Alternator Reversible System), which combines the alternator and starter functions.  The system features a start-stop function that cuts off a car's engine when the vehicle comes to a standstill (for example, at red lights or in traffic jams) and then restarts it instantly and quietly when the driver either releases the brake pedal or engages a gear.

The SKF magnetic sensor bearing performs within the system to provide a powerful, accurate, repeatable, and durable magnetic field with the capability to function under severe operating conditions, including high temperature and speed.  Among other notable benefits, SKF non-contacting magnetic bearings perform lubrication-free and without contamination, exhibit low energy consumption and low vibration, and offer built-in condition monitoring with sensor.

StARS already rides with the Citroen C2 and C3 Stop & Start models, the Smart Micro Hybrid Drive model, and the Mercedes-Benz Class A and B Blue Efficiency models.
