A short introduction.

Most people associate vibration as being simultaneous oscillations in the vertical, horizontal and axial planes. However some machines also suffer oscillations in the supplied torque at the same time as the shaft is rotating. Petrol engines, diesel engines and inverter driven electric motors are classical sources of torsional vibration. Resonance can occur in classical linear vibration systems and it can also occur in situations where torsional vibration is present. In this session we look at the what, why and how of torsional vibration.
