SKF’s annual under 18’s football tournament, which has a prize of the winning team being sent on an all-expenses paid trip to the main tournament in Sweden, will be held in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, on Saturday 23 May.
The Meet the World annual event is the pre-qualifier for the Gothia Cup youth tournament in Gothenburg, Sweden, which will run from 12-18 July 2015. With more than 1,600 teams taking part in tournaments across the globe, the Gothia Cup is the world’s largest youth tournament.
The choice of Aberdeen as the UK Meet the World pre-qualifier location has come about as it is a key base for SKF operations. The teams are being drawn from a number of local secondary schools, with the successful team securing the prize of a trip to Sweden for up to twenty people. This is for the whole team and a number of adult supervisors, covering accommodation, flights, uniforms and food.
SKF, the knowledge engineering company, is not only the sponsor and host of the local tournament, but is also supporting the winning team on their trip to Sweden.
SKF is represented in every country where the tournaments take place and is a main sponsor of the Gothia Cup. The biggest and most well-known football tournament for children and youngsters in the world, this is known by many as the ‘Kids’ World Cup’.
“The main ethos of the Gothia Cup and all of the supporting Meet the World tournaments is to create an environment where young people, regardless of gender, social background, culture, skin colour or religion, can come together while participating in an exciting football tournament,” commented Diane Anderson, QHSE Manager for SKF. Diane added, “On a local level, the Meet the World tournament unites young people from all over the region to either play in an exciting football tournament or simply enjoy cheering on teams throughout this day of community action.”
In light of this and as part of its ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility, SKF Aberdeen’s chosen charity of the year is Charlie House. This locally based children’s charity engages in activities and projects to support children with complex disabilities and life limiting conditions.
Charlie House will host a stand at the Meet the World tournament marquee where proceeds from a tuck shop, raffle and merchandise will be doubled by SKF and put towards future Charlie House projects.
Meet the World takes place on Saturday 23 May 2015 from 10am at Garioch Sports Centre, Burghmuir Drive, Inverurie, Aberdeenshire AB51 4GY.
