Machined polymer seals offer a faster, more flexible alternative to moulded seal production, and within very short lead times the process is capable of delivering fully customised, high quality seals in 'one-off' or low volume production runs, in standard and special-grade machinable sealing materials compliant with FDA, NSF, NORSOK, NACE and other global industry standards.
The machined seal service from SKF goes well beyond the simple supplier-customer model, being delivered more as a problem-solving partnership that covers every stage from conceptual design to serial production. Beginning with a consultative process, during which SKF engineers gain an understanding of a particular sealing application's challenges, the programme moves swiftly to solution development, including choice of appropriate sealing profiles and materials, prototyping and final seal production.
At the prototyping and production stages, SKF can offer extraordinary levels of flexibility, thanks to its innovative SKF SEAL JET machining system, which was developed in-house by the company. The production system uses proprietary software and special machine tools developed for different polymeric materials, and is capable of manufacturing machined seals with diameters of up to 10,000 mm. Even larger diameter seals can be assembled using a special welding technique that delivers the performance of an endless seal construction.
