John Holmberg

Professor and VP with responsibility for Sustainable Development Chalmers University of Technology

Professor John Holmberg

John Holmberg is Vice President and Professor of Physical Resource Theory at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. He also holds Sweden's first UNESCO Chair in Education for Sustainable Development. He is advisor to UNEP, UNESCO and UN-HQ.

In the early nineties he presented socio-ecological principles along with a back-casting framework that has been distributed internationally by The Natural Step’s activities.

“Engineers are often very solution oriented and they are often solving problems, but they are trained to be so much more.

They are trained in critical thinking, systems thinking and trained on building on other’s knowledge. That means they can be part of so much more than just solving problems. They can be a part of defining the problem.”
