Logistics and transportation

Reducing carbon footprint from our goods transportation and business travels

Goods transportation

In cooperation with our transport providers, SKF Logistics and Demand chain operations strives to devise processes and solutions that will ultimately reduce our carbon footprint.

We focus on three key dimensions to reduce emissions from our goods transportation:
•    Shifting towards more efficient transport modes
•    Improve efficiency in the transports chosen
•    Reduce number of transports

As part of the Group's climate objectives, we aim to reduce CO2 emissions per tonne goods shipped to end users 40%, read more on climate objectives.

SKF Logistics Services Collaborations to reduce environmental impact from transportation

NTM
The Network for Transport Measurements is a non-profit NGO that was started in 1993 to establish a common ground of values and methods on how to calculate the environmental performance for different transport modes.  This continuous work has recently resulted to a new CEN standard (EN 16258). SKF Logistics Services uses the method and models developed by NTM for our emissions calculations. Read more here.

KNEG
KNEG was founded in 2006 and is a joint initiative between fifteen national and multinational Swedish companies and agencies. By starting joint projects between members the goal is “to halve emissions from the typical Swedish long-haul transport operation by 2020 compared with 2005. “ SKF Logistics Services has been members since 2012 and aims to launch its first joint project during 2013. Clean Shipping
The Clean Shipping index takes into account the major part of environmental effects connected to shipping, such as emissions to air and water, use of chemicals etc. The index ranks vessels or shipping companies according to the most relevant issue, decided by the user.
The index supports SKF Logistics Services as a cargo owner, to find shipping companies with companies with the best performance regarding CO2 emissions.

Business travel

Air travel accounts by far the largest CO2 emissions in our business travel, resulted from the wide geographical presence we have.

Business travel is a necessary activity for a multinational company like SKF. However with new technologies and hence availability of various networking, collaboration tools, we see to it that these alternatives are easily accessible to our employees.

Virtual collaboration tools are not only alternatives that are carbon- and cost-saving, by taking full advantage of these technologies, our employees can carry-out their business affairs without the need to spend relentless hours in travel transit and away from their families.
