Temperature limits

The permissible operating temperature for Y-bearing units is, depending on unit variant, mainly limited by:
  • the housing material
    • The permissible operating temperature for housings made of composite is –30 to +120 °C (–20 to +250 °F). Other housing materials do not limit the permissible operating temperature of the unit.
  • the PA66 cage (→ Cage materials)
  • the seals
    • The permissible operating temperature for NBR seals is –40 to +100 °C (–40 to +210 °F). Temperatures up to 120 °C (250 °F) can be tolerated for brief periods.
  • the lubricant
    • Temperature limits for the greases used in Y-bearings are provided in table 1. Temperature limits for other SKF greases are provided under SKF greases
    • When using lubricants not supplied by SKF, the temperature limits should be evaluated according to the SKF traffic light concept
When temperatures outside the permissible range are expected, contact the SKF application engineering service.
For high temperature applications with operating temperatures > 120 °C (250 °F) and ≤ 350 °C (660 °F), refer to section Y-bearings and Y-bearing units for high temperature applications.
