Y-bearing flanged units with a cast, composite, composite for SKF Food Line or stainless steel housing

Y-bearings with grub screws
  1. Remove any burrs on the shaft with emery cloth or a fine file, wipe clean with a cloth.
  2. Mount any components that are on the shaft between the two Y-bearing units.
  3. Slide the Y-bearing flanged unit onto the shaft.
  4. Fasten the Y-bearing unit securely to the machine wall.
  5. Mount the second Y-bearing flanged unit on the other shaft end, following steps 3 and 4.
  6. Align the shaft in the bearing arrangement axially and, if possible, turn it a few times.
  7. Tighten the grub screws in the inner ring of both units to the tightening torque listed in the product tables.
  8. If applicable, snap the end cover(s) into place (→ End covers).
Y-bearings with an eccentric locking collar
  1. Remove any burrs on the shaft with emery cloth or a fine file, wipe clean with a cloth.
  2. Mount any components that are on the shaft between the two Y-bearing units.
  3. With the eccentric locking collar removed, slide the Y-bearing flanged unit onto the shaft.
  4. Fasten the Y-bearing unit securely to the machine wall.
  5. Mount the second Y-bearing flanged unit on the other shaft end, following steps 3 and 4.
  6. Align the shaft in the bearing arrangement axially and, if possible, turn it a few times.
  7. Place the eccentric locking collar on the inner ring extension of both Y-bearing units and snug tighten them in the main direction of rotation.
  8. Tighten the locking collars of both units to their final position using a hook spanner with a stud engaging the hole in the circumference of the collar.
  9. Tighten the grub screw in the eccentric locking collar of both units to the tightening torque listed in the product tables.
  10. If applicable, snap the end cover(s) into place (→ End covers).
SKF ConCentra Y-bearings

For convenience, a specially designed hexagonal key with a torque indicator is available for SKF ConCentra units so that the grub (set) screws are not under or over-tightened. This SKF mounting kit (designation 626830) must be ordered separately.

Mounting

  1. Remove any burrs on the shaft with emery cloth or a fine file, wipe clean with a cloth. Check the shaft diameter (recommended shaft tolerances → h9/IT5 or better, table 1).
  2. Lubricate the shaft with a thin coat of light oil.
  3. Mount any components that are on the shaft between the two Y-bearing units.
  4. Slide the Y-bearing flanged unit onto the shaft.
  5. Fasten the Y-bearing unit securely to the machine wall.
  6. Rotate the mounting collar against the sleeve so that one grub (set) screw is directly opposite the slit in the sleeve.
  7. Hold the short end of the hexagonal key and tighten the screws 1/2 a turn. Continue to tighten the screws "finger tight".
  8. Turn the hexagonal key and start to tighten the grub screws by using the long end of the key point. Tighten a 1/4 turn on each screw according to the mounting pattern until the hexagonal key starts to flex.
  9. Mount the red torque indicator of the SKF mounting kit on the short end of the hexagonal key and tighten the screws until the hexagonal key comes in contact with the torque indicator (fig. 1). If another torque wrench is used, tighten the grub screws to the tightening torque listed in the product tables.
  10. Mount the second Y-bearing flanged unit on the other shaft end, following steps 4 to 9.
  11. If applicable, snap the end cover(s) into place (→ End covers).

Do not use auxiliary equipment such as a hammer or a pipe to tighten the grub screws.

Dismounting

  1. It may be necessary to clean the shaft extensions with emery cloth to remove rust or repair surface damage.
  2. Loosen the grub screws in the mounting collar on the first unit.
  3. Loosen the attachment bolts on the second unit.
  4. Gently tap the edge of the sleeve on the collar side, or the inner ring side face on the opposite side to loosen the lock (fig. 2).
  5. Remove the attachment bolts of the first unit.
  6. Withdraw the first unit from the shaft.
  7. Retighten the attachment bolts of the second unit.
  8. Dismount the second Y-bearing flanged unit on the other shaft end, following steps 4 to 6.

CAUTION:

Do not tighten the grub (set) screws until the bearing is positioned on the shaft. If the screws are tightened prematurely, the stepped sleeve may deform. No attempt should be made to remove the sleeve and the mounting collar from the bearing prior to mounting.

When mounting or dismounting, SKF recommends removing all the weight from the bearing to prevent relative axial movement between bearing, sleeve and the shaft.

Y-bearings on an adapter sleeve
  1. Remove any burrs on the shaft with emery cloth or a fine file, wipe clean with a cloth.
  2. Mount any components that are on the shaft between the two Y-bearing units.
  3. Determine the position of the adapter sleeve on the shaft (fig. 3). Take into consideration that later during mounting:
    • the Y-bearing unit will move axially on the sleeve or vice versa
    • the shaft will move axially against the Y-bearing unit
    This is particularly important when mounting the second Y-bearing unit.
  4. Remove the nut and the lock washer from the adapter sleeve.
  5. Wipe the preservative from the bore and outside surface of the sleeve.
  6. Expand the adapter sleeve slightly by inserting a screwdriver in the slot of the sleeve and slide the adapter sleeve into position on the shaft.
  7. Slide the Y-bearing flanged unit up onto the adapter sleeve with the large end of the tapered bore, but do not push it.
  8. Fasten the Y-bearing unit securely to the machine wall.
  9. Install the lock washer and screw the lock nut onto the adapter sleeve until the Y-bearing unit is firmly in position on the sleeve.
  10. Further tighten the lock nut using a hook spanner and tighten the nut to the reccommended angle (fig. 4), both the spanner and angle are listed in the product tables. Make sure that while tightening the nut, the sleeve does not rotate on the shaft.
  11. Lock the nut in position by bending down a tab of the lock washer into one of the slots provided around the circumference of the nut.
  12. Mount the second Y-bearing flanged unit on the other shaft end, following steps 3 to 10.
  13. Make sure the shaft turns smoothly and the bearings are not jammed in place. If necessary, remove the last Y-bearing unit to be mounted, determine a new installation position for the adapter sleeve on the shaft and mount the Y-bearing unit again.
  14. If the shaft turns smoothly, secure the second Y-bearing unit on the adapter sleeve by bending down a tab on the lock washer into one of the slots provided around the circumference of the nut.
  15. If applicable, snap the end cover(s) into place (→ End covers).

CAUTION:

When mounting or dismounting, SKF recommends removing all the weight from the bearing to prevent relative axial movement between bearing, sleeve and the shaft.
