Frictional moment of seals

Where bearings are fitted with contact seals, the frictional losses from the seals may exceed those generated by the bearing. The frictional moment of seals for bearings that are sealed on both sides can be estimated using

Mseal = KS1 dsβ + KS2

where
Mseal =frictional moment of seals [Nmm]
KS1
=constant (table 1), depending on:
  • the seal type
  • the bearing type and size
ds =seal counterface diameter [mm] (table 1)
β =exponent (table 1), depending on:
  • the seal type
  • the bearing type
KS2 =constant (table 1), depending on:
  • the seal type
  • the bearing type and size
In cases where there is only one seal, the friction generated is 0,5 Mseal.
For deep groove ball bearings with RSL seals and D > 25 mm, use the calculated value of Mseal, irrespective whether there is one or two seals.
