Stepped sleeves can have either a conventional sleeve form (fig. 1) or they can be ring-shaped (fig. 2). Ring-shaped stepped sleeves are typically used in applications where the sleeve will also be used to form part of a labyrinth seal (→ Special stepped sleeve designs).

In applications where there are relatively light axial loads, the end of the sleeve with the smaller diameter can have a loose fit on the shaft. However, if the oil injection method will be used to dismount the sleeve, the end of the sleeve with the loose fit should be sealed with an O-ring (fig. 3).
