Angular contact thrust ball bearings

SKF angular contact thrust ball bearings are separable, i.e. the washers and ball and cage assemblies can be mounted independently of each other. Although originally designed to support the rotary tables of drilling rigs, they are also suitable for other applications.

Bearing features

  • Accommodate axial and radial loads
  • High load carrying capacity
  • High axial stiffness
  • Low friction
  • High-speed performance

SKF assortment

SKF angular contact thrust ball bearings are available on request, with a maximum outside diameter of 1 800 mm, in two main designs:

  • Single direction angular contact thrust ball bearings (fig. 1)
  • Double direction angular contact thrust ball bearings (fig. 2)
Designs and variants

Single direction angular contact thrust ball bearings

Single direction angular contact thrust ball bearings (fig. 1) are designed to accommodate axial loads in one direction only and therefore are adjusted against a second bearing or mounted as sets. In their main application area of rotary tables, two bearings are always used and adjusted against each other.

Double direction angular contact thrust ball bearings

Double direction angular contact thrust ball bearings consist of one housing washer, two shaft washers and two different-size ball and cage assemblies (fig. 2). The larger bearing half has a higher load carrying capacity. Double direction angular contact thrust ball bearings have a low height and can accommodate axial loads in both directions as well as moment loads. A single bearing can therefore be used to support rotating machine components relative to stationary components.

Cages

SKF angular contact thrust ball bearings, if not full complement of balls, are fitted with a window-type machined brass cage (fig. 3), either shaft or housing washer centred.

Double direction bearings are equipped with two different-size cages.

For information about the suitability of cages, refer to Cages.

Tolerances

Values: table 1

Double direction bearings:

  • H → 0/+2,3 mm

Permissible misalignment

Cannot tolerate any angular misalignment.

Temperature limits
The permissible operating temperature for angular contact thrust ball bearings can be limited by:
  • The dimensional stability of the bearing washers and balls
  • The cage(s)
  • The lubricant
Where temperatures outside the permissible range are expected, contact SKF.

Bearing washers and balls

SKF angular contact thrust ball bearings are heat stabilized up to at least 150 °C (300 °F).

Cages

Brass cages can be used at the same operating temperatures as the bearing washers and balls.

Lubricants

For temperature limits of SKF greases, refer to Selecting a suitable grease.

When using lubricants not supplied by SKF, temperature limits should be evaluated according to the Traffic light concept.

Designation system
The designations of angular contact thrust ball bearings do not follow any ISO definition. They are identified by drawing numbers:
  • Single direction bearings
    • BDA-..
    • BDAB ..
  • Double direction bearings
    • BEA-..
    • BEAB ..

In addition to the bearings presented in this section, super-precision angular contact thrust ball bearings for special applications, such as machine tools, are shown under:
