Partial discharge testing with the Baker DX
Partial discharge (PD) is a phenomenon associated with voids, cracks or breakdowns in an electric motor's winding, or turn-to-turn insulation.
The PD test is an optional feature of the Baker DX series of SKF static motor analyzers. It was conceived out of documented demand from motor repair and service shop personnel for a test that could capture and analyze evidence of partial voltage discharges that occurred when surge tests are performed. When the typically high, short-term voltages required of surge tests are applied to a motor (as they are by SKF static motor analyzers), partial discharge can be detected and its behavior analyzed. Such PD can be indicative of early motor winding insulation weaknesses or production faults—faults that often accelerate degradation of the insulation. Such premature insulation degradation can reduce the expected service life of a motor. If left undetected or unmonitored, such weaknesses can result in costly unplanned downtime of the production equipment and replacement of the motor.
