Recent research has shown that present maintenance of wind turbines is not optimized. It has revealed large potential savings if maintenance decisions are based on an optimization of direct maintenance cost and indirect cost from lost production over the turbine life. To attain costeffective maintenance is the main objective for research in the Wind Power Asset Management (WindAM) group at Chalmers University of Technology. In close cooperation with SKF and Göteborg Energi, databased methods for maintenance management are implemented: The concept of Reliability-Centred Maintenance (RCM) is applied to wind turbines and combined with quantitative maintenance optimization techniques. Of particular interest is utilization of condition-monitoring data for maintenance decisions. An overview of the data-based, probabilistic approach to maintenance strategy selection and optimization used in the WindAM group and the limited-scope RCM analysis of two wind turbine models will be presented.
