SKF improves health and safety standards at container terminal
An Asian container terminal was experiencing bearing failures in the sheaves of a ship to shore crane, leading to excessive downtime.
SKF performed a Root Cause Failure Analysis of the sheaves and its bearings. The analysis revealed that the effect of increased loads on the sheave’s bearings during an earlier crane redesign had been overlooked. SKF recommended a more appropriate bearing.
Through optimized bearing selection, bearing service life was increased and maintenance costs reduced. Health and safety was also improved, as there was no longer any need for the maintenance staff to frequently replace the sheaves.
