Iron ore was discovered as far back as the 1600s in Kiruna, a town located north of the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland. Due to the remote location and harsh climate, mining didn’t really take off until the railway was built in 1888. Since then, the Iron Ore railway has been the backbone of the northern mining industry.

The Iron Ore locomotives, the strongest in the world, are 68 wagons long with a load capacity of 6800 tonnes. Operated by mining company LKAB, they roll year-round on a single-track so breakdowns aren’t an option.  But a harsh winter climate and heavy loads take their toll on the bearings, lubrication and seals at work.
